March 29, 2023 - San Francisco, CA – The Lost Women of Science podcast series announces the launch of its fifth season, The Doctor and the Fix, which focuses on the extraordinary life and work of psychiatrist Marie Nyswander. In the 1960s, Dr. Nyswander and her team at Rockefeller Institute in New York City started to experiment with a drug called methadone as a treatment for heroin addiction – and they achieved remarkable results. With a reputation as a bold – perhaps even reckless – defier of convention, Marie Nyswander turned the world of addiction upside down for decades to come.

Lost Women of Science Season 5 will launch on Thursday, March 30, 2023, with the first of five episodes. The season trailer is now available at: LostWomenofScience.org. New episodes will be released every subsequent Thursday. The show is available for free across all major podcast listening platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Overcast and Amazon Music. The podcast will continue its partnership with public media organization PRX and Scientific American magazine. This season of Lost Women of Science is underwritten by grants from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and Schmidt Futures.

Katie Hafner, co-executive producer and co-host of Lost Women of Science, said, “Like most everyone else, I knew nothing about Marie Nyswander when I began this project. Now that I’ve learned about her life – and life’s work – I’m convinced that Marie Nyswander should be a household name, especially when it comes to addiction treatment.”

Lost Women of Science Season 5 once again proudly features producer and co-host Carol Sutton Lewis, founder, and host of the blog and podcast Ground Control Parenting, a resource for parents of Black and Brown children, with a particular focus on issues of identity and education. Carol added, “Dr. Nyswander’s work with patients suffering from the effects of substance abuse led her to the groundbreaking yet widely unpopular view of addiction as a disease and of methadone as a viable way to treat that disease. I‘m excited that we are shining our LWoS spotlight on this medical pioneer!”
